[Windows] Setting Your FTP Server With FileZilla Software

After Windows OS installation you need additionally configure the FTP server. In this case, we will be using FileZilla Server software.

Requirements

Windows-based server with one of the following operating systems: Windows Server 2012, 2016 or 2019.

FileZilla Server installation and preparation

First of all download a FileZilla Server installation file via the Windows server browser by entering this link: https://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=server

Open this file to execute the installation wizard. Once the new window opens, press ‘Next’ button to proceed.

At the next step, check some other options than default unless you are sure that you need additional ones.

Now you need to choose a location of the FileZilla Server installation and also press ‘Next.‘

In the next step, you will be asked about how FileZilla Server should start. In this case, we would recommend choosing ‘Install as service, started with Windows (default).‘

Once you proceed to the next step, you will have to choose on what occasions the FileZilla Server interface should be opened.

Once you have done with it, finish installation and a new window will pop up.

There are recommendations to leave this configuration as it is. Your FTP server will work on localhost, which you are configuring right now. Check out all necessary options on the main interface.

How to add users on FTP server?

To connect to the FTP server, you need to create a user on the main interface. Select Edit > Users on the top menu.

In this print-screen, you can see a button ‘Add’ which you will press to create a User.
In the next step, you need to assign a shareable folder that your created user will have access. Also, assign privileges (Read, Write, Delete, etc.) Do this by choosing ‘Shared folders’ on the left side.

After these steps, you have set up FTP Server and created a User with access to the specific folder with specific privileges.

Windows Firewall

Windows Firewall is blocking almost all connections on the Windows Server. For proper FTP Server work, you need to configure a Windows Firewall (Inbound and Outbound connections).

Make sure that changes have been made, as a new user will not be able to connect to FTP Server from the outside.
